There was so much summer traffic to Lake Hopatcong that the Jersey Central also ran trains there, using a very circuitous route from New York via High Bridge and Wharton. It was at least an hour longer than the Lackawanna's route. CNJ passengers could also easily choose to go to shore points. The CNJ had one advantage: their station was actually on the lake shore, while the Lackawanna's required a boat ride up the Morris Canal Feeder to reach the lake. That was, however, an 'across the platform' transfer.

It's very interesting to see how passengers went between the Lackawanna and Asbury Park, on the New York and Long Branch. They could go 'all rail' via the CNJ or PRR or take the CNJ's steamer. For all routes, however, they first had to take the DLW ferry to New York City and walk to another ferry terminal. I guess nobody wanted to go across Newark to reach the PRR, which would probably have saved an hour each way.
