(erielack) E-L action, 1973

Yes, that slide with the SDP-45 long-end-first is taken at Paterson
Junction. I was probably standing on the Newark Branch just before the
switch to the main. You can see the abutments for the original routing of
the Newark Branch bridge to the extreme left of the photo..this is now
"Kuller Road" which was actually built on the old roadbed of the original
Newark Branch. That's Route 46 in the background. That abandoned signal
bridge was only recently removed, and you can see the head of the
tri-mounted signal governing the junction just atop of the motive power.

NS still serves Bay State milling on the remnant of the mainline that
reaches into Clifton just east of Crooks Ave. It is the only customer left
east of Getty Avenue yard, although there has been talk of moving Athenia
Mason Company, which still gets bricks by rail, from it's current location
on the NJT Main-line in Clifton along Clifton Boulevard. The move would have
been to the old New York Sash and door property located about 1/4 mile east
of Bay Street on the old Erie Main......NJT has long sought to get rid of
the few remaining customers on the main, and this would have been one
remedy. But the cost to rehabilitate the tracks east of bay Street, beneath
Piaget Avenue (bridge very old and questionable) was prohibitive...I believe
it was a half a million.....and despite some promises by local politicians,
nothing has become of this, and Athenia still receives it's bricks along the
NJT Main. I happened upon NS 5616 and 5611 switching them and Black Prince
distillery last Thursday.

Getty Avenue yard is now a shadow of what it was, as the last customer
using the yard, (Bulkmatic) appears to be gone and the yard is totally
empty.
