NJT is doing some major trackwork on the Gladstone Branch, with diesels powering some trains and I think bussing in certain circumstances?
I crossed over the line just west of Murray Hill station the other day and saw a piece of track equipment working there; two weeks earlier, there was a tamper working between the Murray Hill and New Providence stations. And I also saw a backhoe inserting branch-new switch ties at General Chemical (formerly Reheis Chemical) in Berkeley Heights.
That's the tie train you saw, I saw it running on the Boonton Line about six months ago when they were doing trackwork there as well. EL maintenance is alive and well in New Jersey! :)
