Re:(erielack) Erie Stillwells

Walter:

The easy one first: the outside of the roof was NOT blue. There are those who say black paint; others say black roofing tar; some say green (body color). All might be true depending on the age of the car, the era modelled, or the time since the last shopping.

Everyone agrees, however, that (especially in steam days) the rook quickly became a dark, sooty gray. A clean one might reflect the blue of the sky -- but only if the sky was blue.

Interior colors could vary with era. I have seen seats that were dark blue, dark green, or dark reddish brown. Seats were recovered, with the latest ones wearing a leatherette or maybe naugahyde material in any of those colors; earlier ones were plush -- same colors. Be wary of interior shots taken on outdoor film while incandescant bulbs were lighting the car -- they will shift the colors to the orange side.

You'll have to choose something and go with it. Meanwhile, no one can tell you you're wrong.

Many of these questions could be answered by looking through "Erie/DL&W Color Guide To Freight and Passenger Equipment" by Larry DeYoung and Mike Del Vecchio; Morning Sun Books. It's available from the ELHS store. Really -- you should have it not only for colord but also for details, such as underbody and ventilation. For instance, has your modeller picked up the fact that many of the newer long Stillwells had aluminum window sash?

Hello,

The gentleman who is working on the Stillwell model sent me the following message.

"Hi Walter
Thanks for the colour photo of the Stillwell
I'm a bit confused about the inside colour now after the other chap said it had light tan walls and olive green seats
There seems to be some light tan colour on parts of the walls but the seat look a dark blue to me
Also have I got the outside roof colour blue correct or should it be white, differant photos have differant colours."

Can anyone please shed some light on the points raised by the modeler?

Thank you for your time.

Sincerely,
Walter
