Re: (erielack) New Erie Book

Ya gotta look at it this way..........Mr. Adams was among the 'movers & shakers' of his era & he had the inside dope on all of it (access).
I first ran across the book at SUNY Binghamton (Harpur College) which I attended on the GI Bill and was punished for it by Sammy 'U missed a call' Miller. Alfred Runte, author of TRAINS OF DISCOVERY told me about it & I got my own copy which I still have (& treasure). It really highlights the machinations of Jay Gould, Jim Fisk, & Dan'l Drew with the por, old ERIE. One of the quotes about these 3 went like this.."They wished to see how close to the door of the penitentiary without entering". Another regarding Jim Fisk being questioned by a legislative commitee as to where the money from the ERIE went, he answered,"It is gone where the woodbine twineth." I was puzzled for years by this one. I knew the woodbine was a floweriing vine and just recently found that folks in the 1800s planted it around their outhouses to cover the smell. What Jim Fisk told the legislators was that the money was 'down the toilet' or outhouse as it was then.
For anyone with an interest in the old ERIE, you can't do better than this book - no engine fotos but lots of 'inside dirt'.

Walt Smith
