From what Preston Cook told me, it wasn't as straightforward as regearing.
He said there were other changes that needed to be made

Paul I believe in Preston's article he said they also had to change the
wheel size to accommodate the new gearing as the big gear wouldn't fit.

Part 3 of Preston Cook's E-unit article appeared in the December 2008
Railfan & Railroad.
Summarizing the changes to the E-8's
- - Original 36" wheels were replaced with 38". They would have preferred
40", but these would not fit in E-unit trucks.
- - Brake rigging was altered to accommodate the 38" wheels
- - He notes that all EL E-8s got the above portions of the conversion, so
they would no longer need to stock 36" wheels
- - 57:20 gearing was changed to 62:15
- - Automatic backward transition was added
- - Steam generators were pulled & replaced with a weight block
- - Steam cab heaters were replaced with hot-water type
- - The fuel/water tank was converted to fuel-only, or replaced entirely,
based on condition of the tank.
