Dear Fred,

Perhaps you and/or your friends on your Erie Lackawana Mailing List may be
able to solve a minor mystery for me.  For over 40 years, I have lived
along the PRR mainline in New Jersey, just south of Rahway.  On one summer
weekday, between 1955 and 1960, I was surprised to watch several Erie
freights come down (westbound) the PRR mainline.  They were pulled by Erie
locomotives and had Erie cabooses at the end.  This occurrence was just
after either a hurricane or major regional rain storm, and it was before
the Erie merged with the Lackawana.

I've always been curious about these movements.

1) What happened on the Erie to cause it to use PRR rails?

2) Where did the Erie hook up with the PRR?

3) How did these trains get back to their own tracks?

4) Were the train crews PRR or Erie or both?

Any information that you or your cohorts might be able to provide
would be of interest.  I do know that in August, 1955, Hurricane Diane
wiped out 70 miles of track on the Lackawanna, although I do not know
where, and perhaps the same storm adversely affected the Erie as well.
