I should have added that, in addition to the cars beeing green, the trucks 
and underframes were black. The roofs were covered in a tarpaper-like 
material (therefore were black and always dusty and weathered). The lettering 
in the 1920s and '30s was gold (bronzing powder and shellac) and in the 1940s 
it was imitation gold.  Keep in mind that since milk cars weren't 
interchanged there was no need to keep the numbers clean.  So many photos 
show cars so dirty that the numbers are very difficult to read.
