RE: (erielack) Erie Street/Avenue/Road/Plaza

Another way to look why this and other places, streets etc. are named, is
that there is a certain body of water (and rather large one) with the name
'Erie' in it. I would believe that it is the reason that one of our
beloved RR's was named the way it was in the 1850's (i.e. because this RR
terminated in Dunkirk, NY when it was built and had the name of this certain
body of water included in its name, etc.). Note that the lake extends from
Buffalo, NY, and borders the states of NY, PA, OH and IN.

Case in point, would you believe that Erie, PA (on the shores of that
particular lake) and not on, or even reasonably near, the Erie RR, would be
named after it. I'm quite confident that it was settled and named that
before 1850.

I would love to be so vain as to think that these names all derive from the
Erie RR, but realistically, the RR just wasn't the first kid on the block
with the name.

As Walt points out, there are some Erie-named streets in places where the
Erie ran. But why are there Erie streets/roads/courts/places, etc. along
railroad tracks where the Erie never ran? In Tipton, Erie Street parallels
a NS line and dead ends into the former Nickel Plate Michigan City to
Indianapolis line. In Indianapolis, Erie Avenue runs next to that same
Nickel Plate line on the northeast side of town. Maybe the Erie's
influence is greater than we think!
