(erielack) Couplers and draft gear

Was at Paul Tup's the other night and he showed me Kadee's Susquehanna PS-1,
which had the oversize No.5 coupler but correct draft gear. It looked
wonderful. My cheif beef with the new scale-ish No.58 couplers is that they
require the grossely oversized Kadee draft gear, which looks even bigger with
the smaller No.58 coupler.

The following is a note from Railway Prototype Cyclopedia-publisher Ed
Hawkins from the freightcars list about getting Kadee to produce the scale
No.58 to fit the scale draft gear on the PS-1s, and perhaps making scale
draft gear boxes to retrofit other models. There enough modelers on this
list who might make a dent in Kadee's production plans. Drop 'em an e-mail,
please.

>>The Kadee #58 couplers have the same shank as the #5 and was designed as a
"plug-in" for their conventional #5 coupler boxes. The #58s will not fit
inside the narrower scale-size draft gear box used on their PS-1 models.
However, I wouldn't be at all surprised if (sometime in the future) Kadee
makes a coupler that marries the coupler head of the #58 and the narrow shank
of their PS-1 coupler. This coupler would likely be offered in a package with
scale-width draft gear boxes like those supplied with the PS-1 models. I make
no guarantees that this will occur. May I suggest that Kadee will be more
likely to produce such a coupler if they hear requests for them from
potential customers like yourself. Their e-mail address is: mail_@_kadee.com.
