Re: (erielack) New EMD locos
Hi
These locomotives are essentially the same as the Morrison-Knudson Cat
powered units that have been around for a few years. Some even received
Santa Fe paint. They are in use by a number of railroads in California and
Texas, mainly in switching roles. Amtrak is leasing one for use in
Connecticut. There have been numerous articles about them in railfan
magazines. Boise and GM have a joint marketing deal with them.
They come from the same shops that built the GP-40FH-2s (called "Pigs" by
some) that NJT use on some former EL lines. Required EL content!
Cheers

Listers:
I was looking at EMD's web page and noticed it is plugging 2 new locos for
switching / branchline ops.: http://www.gmemd.com.
The 2 models are the GP15D and GP20D. Looks like the geep ain't dead yet.
Interesting notes:
1.) They both ride on remanufactured 'Bloomberg' trucks;
2.) They both have an automatic engine shutoff feature, where the engine
shuts down after extended idling and can be restarted when the water temp
falls below a 'protection threshold'. (So much for our list discussions on
the topic that an engine can't be shut off to save fuel / emissions because
of operating temp / water freezing issues);
3.) 'Cupola' (I can't think of a better term) style cab to allow 360 degree
vision. Similar to an RS or GE centercab type cab.
It appears that the GP20D is essentially an improved GP 38-2.
Does anyone know if any N. American RR's have ordered (or are considering)
these locos?
Regards,
Chris
