Re: (erielack) Erie/DL&W Main in NYS

Binghamton westward is intact with rail to the Old Vestal Road overpass in
Vestal. The ROW is overgrown from there to a quarter mile to the west,
where the Vestal Rail Trail starts and the ROW is paved for the next 2
miles. At Main street, the ROW ends and there is a hardware store on top of
the ROW. Just west of there, the ROW is covered by route 17. Part of the
ROW is visible again in Apalachin where the depot is still standing in it's
original location. Some old poles and crossarms can be seen in the tree
line for the next 1/2 mile and then the ROW is covered by 17 to Nichols NY.
At Nichols, traces of the ROW is visible through town - but no track is
left. The station and freight house are standing but in rough condition. I
can't vouch for west of there.

Subject: (erielack) Erie/DL&W Main in NYS

| Dear All,
|
| How much of the former DL&W ROW between Binghamton and Gibson, NY is still
intact (i.e. not obliterated, or paved over with the NYS Thruway)?
|
| Also, I was looking through my Erie Memories book, and noticed that the
former Erie main from Bingo to Corning has a somewhat up-and-down profile.
Was this the case with the DL&W line?
|
| Finally, for what reasons was the old Erie kept, at the expense of the
former Lackawanna Route?
|
| Thanks a lot,
|
