It is interesting to look back at the formation of CR. In March and
April of 1976 CR bought full page ads in TIME and other magazines
proclaiming a new age of railroad service in the northeast. At that
time they proclaimed they were building on the heritage of the great
railroads that were combined to make up CR. They had pictures of
all of the CR member's locomotives with their logos proudly
displayed. The only picture not correct was EL's because they
were added so late. Their picture was a close-up side view of an
EMD low hood unit with the EL logo on the side of the short hood.
Legally CR had to acquire some title to the names of the
companies they took over for liability purposes. Could you imagine
a train with say a Reading name on it hitting a person and killing
them. Without taking title to the companies, CR could have said:
"Take your claims to Reading, it wasn't our engine". Something to
think about.
