Re: (erielack) Lackawanna Passenger Trains
Dear Gary, Ed and Group,
Keep in mind that New York Central held a considerable position in DL&W
stock. According to some accounts, the Central's management insisted
that Hoboken-Buffalo running times for Lackawanna passenger trains be
slower than those for competing NYC trains. I believe this situation is
described in Karl Zimmerman's "Erie Lackawanna East."
Station dwell times aside, also keep in mind that despite its shorter
mainline, the Lackawanna still had steeper grades and sharper curves
than the Water Level Route, even after the cutoffs were completed.
