Trey, Before the U34CH's came along because of a purchase by the NJDOT, the Erie & E-L used Alco RS2's and RS3's, GP-7's, and Alco PA's, along with the E-8's for passenger service. I can recall the Alco road switchers back in the 1950's and 1960's on the Main Line/Newark Branch/Bergen County Line/Greenwood Lake Branch commuter trains, and I rode behind them into the early 1970's when the U34CH's took over. I noticed that their passenger trains was either U34CH or E8s, and their passenger trains, and I am assuming whatever was available went to what was needed at that time for that train or did EL have a prefrence on a certin motive power arrangement on their freights (IE coal, grain, manifest, local ect)? I was trying to figure that out but no photos of people I talked to could give me an anwser on what the story was.
