Here's a grade profile comparison between Chicago and Hornell. The top
chart is the Erie main for the entire distance,
and the bottom is Nickel Plate (Chicago-Buffalo) + Erie Buffalo Branch
(Buffalo-Hornell) corridors.
Chart is from the N&W offices in Roanoke, no doubt part of the route
comparison process that preceeded the N&W+NKP
merger.
Clearly, the NKP won the contest from Chicago to Buffalo, after which
there was some serious need for evelvation east of
there. :)
