More interesting factoids from Bill Sheppard... - ---------------------- Years ago, a grade crosing elimination project in Jersey City resulted in shifting the Erie Northern Branch track to the parallel NYS&W right-of-way where both railroads crossed County Road. As a result of this improvement, there was a short stretch where two separate tracks shared a common (NYS&W) right-of-way. Further west, near Lundys Lane, Erie and NYS&W tracks formed a four-track system to Granton Junction, where these routes split. For operating convenience, the two Erie tracks were used for westbound passenger and freight trains; whereas, the NYS&W tracks handled the eastbound traffic. This arrangement, I understand, unraveled not long after Granton Junction Tower was destroyed by fire and both railroads resumed independent, bi-directional operation of their parallel tracks. Years later, however, someone on the NYS&W discovered that the sucessor to the Erie (Conrail) was still using their right-of-way absent any agreement and blockaded the bridge over County Road with the help of the Hudson County Sheriff. This caused some consternation after the 1st Northern shoved out at Croxton, I recall. In any event, this matter was subsequently resolved through negotiations and today, both tracks over County Road are operated by Conrail.
