RE: (erielack) SDP45 scale drawing?

I haven't found an accurate set of drawings, either, but I've been using an Overland Models SDP45 to see the differences. Basically, it appears that the underframe is stretched by 5 feet - the extra 5 feet is in the fuel tank - and the body lengthened by 5-1/2 feet with the extension. All other dimensions are the same as an SD45.

I have a whole lot of Kato and P2K SD45s, some of which I plan on "stretching." (another one of my endless list of projects to do).

Scoping out the Kato unit (haven't looked at my P2K's yet, but I assume it would be similar, the steps appear to be:

1. Take apart the model, removing the gear towers/trucks and the motor.
2. Cut the frame in half at the fuel tank area to lengthen.
3. Screw brass L-channel on both engineer and fireman sides of the frame to bridge the gap between the two halves of the frame (this should be 5', but I need to remeasure to make sure)
4. Remount the trucks and motor. You will now need new longer universals to connect the gear towers with the motor. This should take care of the frame modifications.
5. Using a miter box and a razor saw, remove the rear end of the SD45 just behind the tapered radiator grills.
6. Use sheet styrene to extend the sides of the carbody back by 5-1/2' (again, need to check that measurement). You can fabricate your own "taper" for the fairing going from the carbody to meet the flared radiators; other people I know use part of a spare dynamic brake housing to fill this in. Don't forget the roof, too!
7. Use a Cannon & Co "35-line" long hood rear end to cap off the back of the model.

These are the rough steps, but they'll get you 90% of the way there. Good luck!
