The mailman delivered a real treat yesterday, the new book from Morning Sun Books written by publisher Bob Yanosey. "Trackside around New Jersey" follows Bob's career in NJ railroading between 1968 and 1983, and what makes this interesting to "us folks" is that Bob's career started off on the EL. The first third of the book is exclusively devoted to EL. The photography is terrific, and photos well-reproduced (and shockingly for a Morning Sun book, there are a few pages up front with Bob's EL black & white photography - also nice). But the neatest part about the book are the stories Bob shares about the operations and the people with whom he worked (read the story at the bottom right of page 22 and associated photo on page 23, it's a hoot!) The photo selection is nice, too, since Bob chose many images from "out-of-the-ordinary" locations. There are intriguing shots (two U34CH's leading a dead-in-tow F7, a beautiful two-page spread of North Newark station, the USS Ling being towed past DB drawbridge), and all the shots are of the sharp and well-exposed variety. The epilogue on the last page is particularly touching and puts a nice end on this book. By all means, a highly recommended book for the EL fan! - Paul P.S. If you're wondering what the other 2/3 of the book covers, it's Bob's later jobs on the CNJ, PC, CR and NJDOT/NJ Transit - and there are some EL photos/units snuck into many of those sections as well :) The Erie Lackawanna Mailing List Sponsored by the ELH&TS http://www.elhts.org ------------------------------
