Paul's really good about kicking off a discussion of the EL picture at the beginning of each month and I much enjoy the results. Well for me that's the home calendar, here at work I have the Lackawanna & Wyoming Valley RR Historical Society (aka Laurel Line). Albeit in black and white, in many months it features fine DL&W or Erie topics. February has the DL&W Hampton Classification Yard outside Scranton from 1939. Looks to be at least 34 tracks. Box cars to the far right and middle left, hoppers in the middle. Looks to be four ladders which would mean 4 classification areas, correct? The DL&W Bloomsburg Branch appears to be at the far left. The caption states that the decline of coal traffic made the yard less useful and it ceased operations in the 1950s. Today the Reading and Northern railroad operates a single track thru the area. Now for the insightful question to generate e-mail discussions .... Well I can't think of any at the moment except does anyone know where this Hampton Yard is in relation to modern landmarks, streets, or roads?
