(erielack) More on EL Fantrips

Listers,

Adding to Paul's list of EL fantrips:

May 15, 1965. This trip sponsored by the Branford Electric Railroaders Assoc.
operated from Hoboken to Beacon, NY (EL Maybrook New Haven). RS's powered the
train which included a Diner-Lounge and a Diner-Parlor. (I had to consult my
photos). This is the trip where the Dining Car Department was selling surplus
china from the Diner-Parlor.

June 12, 1965. RS powered trip from Hoboken to Wilkes-Barre and Scranton via
EL and Lehigh Valley. Sponsored by RRE. Stillwells, a Diner-Lounge,
"Buffef-Lounge", and an baggage car with protected open doors. Great trip! (As a
sidenote, RRE mentioned on the trip flyer that "due to the high cost of operating
this unusual and rare trip", they would need 400 adult fares at $12.50 per person
for the trip to operate). It was standing room only!

September 23, 1966. If my memory serves me correctly, this was an RRE
sponsored trip. Using two RS's, it operated over the commuter lines, focusing on the
lines which would soon lose service effective October 3, 1966. The Caldwell
Branch, Northern, etc. I don't recall it going to Carlton Hill. A Diner-Lounge
was included in the consist. Somewhere I have the trip flyer. I was on the
train, and it was a fun excursion, with the exception that we were always changing
direction.

October 8, 1967. NRHS excursion west of Binghamton operating with two PA's
and mostly former Erie 52-seat heavyweight coaches. See Vol. 4, EL In Color, The
Early Years, page 33.

October 1967 with PA's and an E unit. I don't believe this ever operated.

June 9, 1968. This trip, was organized as part of the RRE Convention held in
New York City. I do not believe that it was originally intended to be a
"Farewell to the PA's." When I get a chance, I will get out the original trip flyers
and onboard guide and check. There were other trips organized as part of the
convention activities, but this one was the most popular!

October 6, 1968. NRHS trip from Syracuse to Oneonta. E8s 824, 825, and 822
Consist consisted of coaches 1306, 1315, 1325, 1308, 1324, 1310 1321,
Diner-Lounges 746 and 747, Erie coach 1076, and Stillwell 2663.

October 11, 1969. High Iron Company fantrip from Hoboken to Scranton and
return with NKP 759 and Stillwells.

As far as I know, the High Iron Trip was the last to operate using Stillwell
coaches, and the last to run before the termination of through passenger
service.
