(erielack) Erie Lackawanna Through Passenger Service - a first review

I got my copy of John Boehner's new book, "Erie Lackawanna Through Passenger Service In Color Volume 1 : 1960-1965" yesterday and I wanted to give a first review of it.

The book covers pre-EL passenger trains in the years immediately before the 1960 merger. Next the first 5 years of EL long distance passenger trains are covered. This book follows the general Morning Sun Book format, but John's captions are long and give a lot of detail of each train. In addition to the great photos (most of which have never been published before) you get a sense of how each of these trains operated and what happened each time the EL revised the schedules. This is a great source for following the logic and operations concerning the movements of diners, parlor-buffet cars, sleeping cars and even the Tavern-Lounge cars (yes, they had a few strange assignments in the early years). There are also pages of text throughout this volume covering the history of each railroad's passenger train history and one on the early EL Passenger Sales Department.

After reading this book you will rediscover how extensive the early EL passenger service really was and how "different" it was from the PRR and NYC. As for photos there are a lot of great ones, many of equipment and station action, the stuff that made passenger trains such a fabric of local life, even this late. I loved a "mood" shot of an ex-Erie heavyweight diner at the end of an eastbound train in East Stroudsburg. I also enjoyed the shots of EL and NKP trains going into and out of the DL&W Buffalo Terminal in its dying days.

The official release date for this book is tomorrow. You can buy this book at the pre-release price of $47.98 from the ELDCPS through tomorrow. After tomorrow the price goes to $55.98. Plus the proceeds as always go to restore some of the passenger equipment this book celebrates.
