1. Re the anniversary of the demise of EL, our Listers' reflections make me remember the exciting breed of railroading that accompanied both the overtures to the merger and the early years of combined operation before shrinkage was started. Having the good fortune to be commuting to Hoboken when the Erie moved there from JC, I just remember the variety of equipment and the energy of the place. The mix of Erie and DL&W through-line motive power and cars (also NKP) was visually striking, as was the Trainboard with all those departures and arrivals. This List does not have to have enumerated the different diesel models and color schemes that floated through the Hoboken tracks. There many hopes at the time but we all know what happened. 2. Re Michael's return to riding the PVL, it is amazing how much we railfans/railroaders notice (I guess we are hyper-"visual" people) of details and of change. When during the holidays I rode the old Erie main from Ramsey to Hoboken for the first time in decades, my eyes saw change all over the place, from new structures to changed usage to derelict factories. The amount and the extent of the change is sort of mind-boggling. It is almost impossible not to have visual ghosts come back. When approaching West End, I could almost see a Trainmaster pulling a half-dozen Boonton cars and entering the tunnel next to a black and yellow PA with Stillwells. That time window gave us train-watchers really great railroading! Joe Braun The Erie Lackawanna Mailing List Sponsored by the ELH&TS http://www.elhts.org ------------------------------
