Paul,

The Cut-Off was single-tracked in either 1958 or 1959, at about the same
time as consolidations west of Binghamton were being made in anticipation
of the merger with the Erie.  Bill Herkner described to me several years
ago how the DL&W at that time wavered back and forth on whether to retain
the eastbound or westbound main on the Cut-Off.  If memory serves, the
decision was made to keep the eastbound main because it was in slightly
better physical condition than the westbound track, which is ironic because
the westbound main historically had the higher speed limit.

Assuming the date on the Blairstown shot is accurate, it indicates the
Cutoff was single-tracked prior to the merger, which I didn't realize. I
thought the only pre-merger singling on the DL&W was the portion through
Bell's bridge after the 1956 Diane washout. When was the Cutoff singled?
Also, why is an old troop sleeper spotted at the freighthouse?
