The New York Central did the same thing, for safety and maintenance. Every piece of glass is a potential broken window, especially in urban areas of the Northeast. Steel plates don't break, and they aren't a good target for miscreants who hang heavy objects at cab height from overpasses. It's the same reason that Boston railroads, including NH, PC, Amtrak and MBTA, cover locomotive windshields with heavy wire screens.
