(erielack) ELHS 2006 Eastern Region spring meeting

Here's a quick report on yesterday's Eastern Region meeting...

The presentations were led off by Al Holleuffer, who had an excellent selection of early EL slides in the northern NJ area. It seemed as if every image had a story behind it (and thanks to Perry Billington for also adding additional commentary) - I learned a lot of new things I hadn't known about EL operations in this area.

Next up was Preston Cook, who presented his 30th Anniversary edition of his "Erie Lackawanna Memories" slides presentation. If you have Preston's book, you have a good idea of the quality of his photography. This edition of the show was done entirely in Powerpoint with a great musical soundtrack. It was nice to finally see this presentaiton, as I always had other commitments every time he showed his earlier iterations of it.

Preston also presented a second slide show on Diesel Tug Boats, a topic he seems to be quite knowledgeable about. As part of the presentation, he covered both Erie and DL&W tugs in nice detail. For a topic I thought was fairly "boring," it held my attention, and Preston's technical expertise really showed here.

Next came Frank Etzel and this writer with an edited selection of Frank's 8mm EL movies from the late 1960s and early 1970s, to the accompanyment of Irish new age singer Enya. The video was well received!

After the dinner break, we got back together for a presentation by Pete Hasler and Bill McKelvey on the effort to bring Erie doodlebug 5012 back to New Jersey, and the expense entailed around that effort. Pete showed a selection of vintage Erie doodlebug images to entice the membership to donate to the effort and get the car back.

Next up was Bill Greenberg on DL&W/early EL. Presented geographically from Hoboken to Croxton, Bill hit locations that weren't commonly reached by other railfan photographers, and his concentration on trying to hit the last vestiges of the DL&W after the merger is admirable and greatly appreciated!

Finally, the last presenter of the evening was Peter Klopper, who showed a veritable potpourri of EL images taken during the life of the EL from all across the system. It's always nice to see photos from a photographer you hadn't seen before (and Peter admitted he hadn't shown these slides in many years), and Peter's shots were nicely exposed and composed, and featured lots of classic power including PA's and Train Masters.

Once again, big kudos go out to Pete Hasler for setting the event up - well-run and always a blast!

	- Paul
