PAD stood for "Pre Arranged Detour"................ An Operating Department name for having one track out of service for maintenance between two points and using the other track for all trains. Usually a Conductor was assigned to one end of the detour and a Trainman to the other. They handled the crossovers and the trains operated over the "detour" route on the authority of the PAD as defined in the Special Order and on Hand Signals from the employee involved. With the current of traffic, trains could follow one another through the PAD (after receiving the hand signal from the employee). Against the current of traffic, one train per block and the block for the most part, was the complete length of the PAD. Anyone is invited to add more info on this...................
