(erielack) Marion Intermodal Terminal

On Monday, Sept 04, Paul Brezicki stated....

"There's an interesting sidebar in this month's Trains article about KCS
that describes operations at what may be the newest intermodal terminal in
the US: Marion Industrial Center, the former GSA facility that was the
location of EL's Marion piggyback ramp in the 70's, used mostly for UPS
traffic"

I need to clear up some misinformation. Yes, the Marion Industrial Center,
which was ONE of TWO GSA facilities in Marion, is the new intermodal
facility....However, this site was NOT used ever by the EL. This GSA area,
or the "depot" as it's known here in Marion, is on the south side of the
Erie/NYC trackage and was thusly served solely by the NYC and PC. The other
GSA facility, known locally as the "ordinance plant" was on the north side
of the track and was served by the Erie/EL from a facing point connection
east of Madison Avenue which crossed Fairground Street and went north into
the ordinance plant area, and the Pennsylvania (now, the NS) railroads whose
connecting spur came from the far north end near Likens Road and went
southward into the ordinance area. The two railroads shared a wye near the
site of the current UPS facility. UPS purchased some of this GSA property
for their operations and thus was born the EL piggyback ramp. Part of the
joint operating agreement for the trackage between Galion and Marion between
the Erie/EL and NYC/PC was that the Erie served all customers on the north
side and the NYC serviced all on the south side.

Hope this helps clear up the misunderstandings....
