RE: (erielack) West End (2)

There are diagrams of the 1940-50 realignment of the panhandle here:

They require the free djvu plugin.

I recall reading that the east end of the Panhandle (aka Pittsburgh,
Cincinnati, Chicago & St Louis, Pennsy's version of NYC's Big Four), even
aside from tunnels had an inferior alignment compared with "The Fort Wayne",
which was a factor in CR bypassing it in favor of the route through
Crestline.

All
The Pittsburgh-Columbus portion of the PRR was cursed to c. 1950 with a
number of very close clearance tunnels in the 30 miles or so west of the
Ohio River. The PRR bypassed all of them except Gould Tunnel which was
ultimately single-tracked and slightly improved. It was a multi-million
dollar project, all privately funded, and earned the Federal Government's
lasting contempt, as did most railroad investments. MJC
