NO low-door Comet I's (1600 and 1700 series) are in service on NJT. They were retired at the end of 2005 because of a safety related issue: the outside vestibule doors cannot be opened from there in case of an emergency. The releases are inside the cars. An FRA order that was based on the fiery MARC wreck with the Capitol Limited says the emergency releases have to be near the doors and easily reaced. The high door cars (5100 and 5700 series) have this feature and continue to roll, including the Comet IB cars which were rebuilt from the Arrow I fleet!\ The "Snack-Bar" decals were removed when the cars were rebuilt with 3-2 seating.
