For what it's worth, here's a page that summarizes copyright terms in 
the US: 
<http://www.copyright.cornell.edu/training/Hirtle_Public_Domain.htm>. I 
have not asked any lawyers competent in copyright law about it's 
accuracy.

The table suggests that works published before 1977 WITHOUT a copyright 
notice (which is specifically described in the law, so any old notice 
won't do) MAY be public domain.

As usual, I expect plenty of heat and little light from copyright 
discussions.
