Re:RE: (erielack) Binghamton/Sayre Connections

Well, folks, as a matter of fact, the D&H may not have been getting all that much money out of the "Moon switch." As far as rates were concerned, it all happened at one station -- Binghamton -- so the D&H probably would not have gotten any of the line haul, just a switching charge which might not have covered their real costs.

More important would have been the improvement in service. Instead of the car waiting for ERIE to switch it over to D&H and then for the D&H to come over and place it, it was delivered right away. Moon was happy, which made ERIE happy; D&H didn't have the bother, which made them happy -- is everybody happy?

Now, I am by no means well versed in rates and revenue divisions. My perspective was always from Moon's point of view: did an ERIE linehaul, with D&H delivery, cost me extra money? If so, how could I avoid it? If ERIE and D&H wanted to get together to solve my problem, I'd be all for it.

And the whole proceeding would be an ICC matter, with proposal, comment, protest (if any), rebuttal, and decision all being published through regular tariff channels over a . Remember, both DL&W and any other Binghamton shipper/consignee would have been VERY interested.

What I have heard from more than one source is that the agreement to allow D&H/LV interchange via
the ERIE tracks was a bargain struck so that the ERIE could have the switching rights to Moon Milling in Binghamton. The D&H owned those rights because that was D&H track over there. Shipments
on the ERIE to Moon would get all the way to 100 yds from their destination, and then have to be switched into place by the D&H. Randy, no doubt, can explain how this affected the distribution of the money involved, but as the terminating road, D&H was getting a good piece of it for doing virtually no work. . .
