I believe the LV went under EL east of Ellis Town and yes, east of there were very tight. If you have EL in Color Vol 2, have a look at the "two-fer" on pg 79.

The Waverly connection was at one time the west end of the LV, when it used trackage rights over Erie to reach Buffalo before it completed its own line through Geneva. Erie was still broad gauge, so a third rail was installed all the way to Buffalo to accomodate the LV. This connection was revived with Conrail when the LV main was taken OOS north of Van Etten Jct (the Sayre-Van Etten portion was retained to continue to serve the Milliken power plant at Ludlowville). IIRC for the first year or two, Buffalo trains took a zig-zag route, using the former NYC from Corning via Newark NY, before changing to the more direct former Erie route through Hornell.
