The "List" is a good place to have this discussion. The former DL&W Pullman next to Business Car no. 2 seems to have gone through the shop for a new paint job. The Maroon on no. 2 is slightly faded due to sun and the caustic solution in car washers. 

At the time, the EL used paints which did not wear as well as today's paints. The exact color matches are available from DuPont, who has converted the old Duco/Dulux numbering system for use with currently available DuPont products. When Midwest paints Diner-Lounge 741 this year, they will be using DuPont Imron. Midwest will have DuPont exactly match the Lackawanna/EL colors by using the old Duco/Dulux numbers. Diner-Lounge 741, and any other of our cars that are painted in EL colors, will most likely look like the Pullman to the right in the photo, as we will have a new paint job that will not fade, and will look the same for many years. Which means that most likely, our cars will not look like no. 2 does after a few years of use. 

From the Pullman-Standard specification sheet I have (issued March 24, 1949) for Coaches 316 to 325, the original DuPont codes that were applied to the cars when constructed by Pullman - Standard are below. Someone on the list also forwarded to me (Thank you!) an official ACF painting diagram for Lackawanna 10-6 Pullmans.

There is a descrepancy. The Pullman specifications show the following colors and codes provided by DuPont: 

Maroon: "DuPont Dulux exterior enamel: #88-2336 Maroon"

Gray:     "DuPont Dulux exterior enamel: #88-6451 GRAY" 

Yellow:   "DuPont Dulux exterior enamel: #88-5438 YELLOW"

From the ACF specification sheet (issued June 20, 1947):

"GRAY - DUCO - DUPONT 246 - 31402"

"YELLOW - DUCO - DUPONT 246 - 54388"

"MAROON - DUCO - DUPONT 246 - 6957"

"BLACK - DUCO - DUPONT 246 - 2039"

"BLACK - DUCO - DULUX  88 - 005"


Note that Pullman used DuPont "Dulux" while the ACF specifications were for DuPont "Duco" except for 88-005 Black. I think we can assume that since Pullman was using Dulux, and ACF Duco, there would be different color codes. We will have Midwest discuss this with their DuPont dealer to make certain we obtain the correct color match. 

There has also been some discussion over the years that the Lackawanna colors were a bit deeper and richer then when later used on EL engines and equipment. This may be caused by EL using a different supplier, or the difference between Duco and Dulux.

We will make every effort to make certain the equipment is painted as close as possible to the early 1960's era we are trying to portray.

I think this has been brought up before, however, looking at the photo, the  
car to the right sports the maroon that I remember.
 
This raises a question that perhaps has been raised before. Didn't they  keep 
records of what blends they used to create the original shade of maroon?  
There was discussion of Erie yellow differences awhile back so I imagine that  
the same applies for DL&W/EL maroon. Can anyone add to this?
