Yes, the diamond was first applied in the '20s, and I'd believe, absent other documentation, that it first appeared on Berkshires in terms of locomotives. However, the transition from the shorter, Roman lettering to the taller Gothic lettering was in the early 40s, as demonstrated by the photos referenced above. Now, as to the use of the diamond on >>rolling stock<<, it has been noted on box cars in photos from near, if not before, the turn of the last century.
