(erielack) 833 questions

1. [Does anyone know the mechanical condition of 833? Is it serviceable?
Thanks,Bob D.]

I had a chance yesterday at the Port to chat with a cordial and very
enjoyable Jimmy Wilson. As we were talking about another topic, a passerby
asked the same question and Jimmy responded by saying that 833 was
operational but had some real rough spots that needed work.

2. [From: "Montgomery, Edward T" One thing that gets me is how much
maintenance EL/Erie/DL&W put into their locomotives to keep up the pretty
face. It doesn't take long for these engines to loose their luster. How much
work will be required to keep 833 in the condition she is in? I suppose Erie
ran her through thewash rack at the end of each run.]

In a conversation I recently had with someone who has researched the paint
issue well, the Erie's washing was paradoxically what contributed to the
hasty "weathering" of the earlier Duco paints. The Erie (and maybe all
roads??) used an acid wash that today's environmental regs would never
allow. This wash may have loosened dirt up fast but it was nasty on the
paint and was responsible for the quick fading especially of the yellows and
the light green. IMveryHO, 833 should get the gentle care without overkill
that we might give a new auto that we prize.
