I think it was in the fall of 1966 when the EL made major changes to
their schedule lopping off the Northern Branch, Wanaque-Midvale trains,
Newark Branch, trains to Washington as well as reducing the M&E to
hourly service that finally got the State into the act. The old Erie
Mainline service also suffered a major hit. Within six months, much of
the service was restored using equipment that EL probably knew they
would have to use or they would have scrapped all the old Stillwells in
November of '66. In the late 60s, Jersey Arrows were built with train
number boards to use on the M&E. They never made it there because of
the time it took to convert the 3KV line over to AC.

The question was when did NJ subsidize the *EL* commuter operation -
Jersey Arrow MU cars were for the Penn Central, not EL.
The State did start kicking in money towards the operation in the late
60's, and eventually when the EL said they wanted to replace their old
tired equipment with new cars/locomotives, the State stepped up in a big
way with the P-S commuter car and U34CH purchases.
