Bob - From "A Century of Progress," the centennial history of the D&H, "On (September 28, 1903) the president (of the D&H) reported that the Erie Railroad Company was willing to provide the (D&H) company with trackage rights for freight trains between Binghamton and Owego. By reaching Owego, freight could be interchanged directly with the Lehigh Valley railroad (sic), and on December 1 this arrangement became operative under a contract." The book is silent on the reason, or on any other deals made between the two railroads. It also does not mention D&H/LV joint run-through operation, so that probably occurred after 1923. The actual interchange was Owego. The LV operated under the D&H trackage rights over the Erie to reach Binghamton. From the 1920's into the early 1960's, the Erie had an intermittent automatic train stop system on the Susquehanna Division, and all locomotives operating between Susquehanna and Hornell (and I believe also on the Delaware Division to Port Jervis) needed ATS equipment. The D&H maintained two passenger RS-2's with ATS at Binghamton. One of the two made a daily round trip to Albany on passenger trains 205 and 208, then to Sayre and back every night. The LV power also needed ATS during that period, and I believe they had two or more Alco's that were dedicated to the Binghamton trains. Also at that time, per diem on freight cars was figured on a daily basis, from midnight to midnight. If the headlight of the D&H train made it to the LV at Owego before midnight, the LV paid the per diem on the cars. If not, the D&H ate it. After the D&H entered the LV at Owego going west, the cars had been interchanged. That was not LV trackage rights - it was simply a run-through agreement. And as far as the Erie was concerned, the Binghamton-Owego trains were D&H trains, regardless of crew or motive power. I don't know how the D&H paid the Erie, but it could have been on a per-car basis. How did the LV get from Owego to Bingo? I can find no record of LV tracks east of Owego. I thought the rights agreement was between Erie and D&H. Was there an trackage rights agreement between Erie-LV? All three? If so, what was it and if not how did this work?
