I tripped myself. The term "Medium Clear" should be "Clear Medium" in DL&W and EL terminology. Most other railroads, including my NYC and D&H, used "Medium Clear." EL had a good reason for being different, though. When signal indications are exchanged across the engine cab by name, (Rule 34), it is less likely that "Clear Medium" would be misunderstood as "Clear" than would "Medium Clear." Sometimes only the last word makes it across in noisy conditions. > As stated before by Bill Sheppard, the best indication for eastbounds > off the siding at East Lincoln Park was clear medium (Red-over-Green) - > does that mean the westbound interlocking signal at Mountain View simply > gave a "Clear" indication? No. If the westward signal from the Greenwood Lake to Boonton at Mountain View displayed an aspect indicating "Clear" it would be Green/Red/Red, and a "Clear Medium" would be Red/Green/Red. Which one was used depends on whether or not EL counted on the timetable speed restriction to enforce the 30 mph limit. Either one would only be true if East Lincoln Park was lined for the main and cleared (either "Clear" or "Approach"). If East Lincoln Park was lined for the siding, under EL rules, the best you could get at Mountain View would be "Approach Medium," Yellow/Green/Red, if Mountain View was signaled as as straight route, or "Medium Approach" if Mountain View was signaled as a diverging route.
