Re:RE: RE: (erielack) oscillating lights (was: EL calendar -

Most oscillatiing lights (and not all of them were MARS lights) gave the engineer a choice of oscillate or fixed, along with the option of having it fixed but looking off to one side -- early ditch lights.

Most installations of oscillating lights were in conjunction with a fixed, straight-ahead, white headlight which, itself, had "bright" and "dim" settings. An oscillating headlight alone would be distracting to the enginemen to the point of danger and, therefore, probably in violation.

Paul, I don't think the DL&W engineers used the lights much, In all the years of my growing up along the Scranton-Dunmore main line I believe I saw an oscillating headlight actually illuminated and working once. That was up till 1966 when I departed for service to our beloved country.

First off, I thought the red bulb on the upper headlight was an emergency light that only came on if the train brakes were put into an "emergency" application, and it wasn't used at any other time?

Second of all, how well did the oscillating light work. Was it even used at the end, or was it simply fixed?
