Huletts unloaded the boats (as they were called on the Great Lakes), and the
cargo at the Erie Dock was iron ore. Other commodities could be handled by
Huletts such as coke, coal and limestone.

The boats at that time were usually of such small size that the entire boat
unloaded at one dock but sometimes a boat would stop at one dock and unload
half of the cargo, then when lighter and a more shallow draft, would proceed up
river to another dock and complete the unloading at another dock.

It is common presently for a boat to arrive at a dock such as Pinney Dock at
Ashtabula, unload a shipment of stone or ore, then move over to the former
Conrail Dock about a mile away and load coal for Detroit rather than to return
to Minnesota empty,
