Also remember:  not only was there some latitude in painting and lettering, according to which shop was doing it, there was considerable longitude in time as they got around to it.  There would be long periods when several generations of paint schemes would be running together, perhaps on otherwise identical locomotives.

Something that I noticed recently while looking through some EL books, is that some of the repainted C-424's had the "ERIE LACKAWANNA" up high on the stripe and some had it low on the stripe. I think this was to avoid having to remove the door handles to apply the stencils.
