RE: (erielack) Lackawanna Cutoff article-Daily Record

I'm trying very hard to ignore your rant, Jerome, but let's think about this rationally, OK?

I think that if GE couldn't find the room in the carbody for all the equipment, somebody should send
them a copy of the July issue of Railfan & Railroad, so they can read the article "Something about F
Units" by Preston Cook. They should take particular note about the FL9 that was never built. Now,
that was done so that they could carry additional water to supply steam to passenger trains on
long-distance trains. But they did have additional space, and they carried a lot of weight with
reasonable axle loadings, given the five axles.

I suspect that the real reason that GE didn't respond (and other builders, likewise) is that the
market seemed pretty iffy. You know, IF we build this line, and IF we decide to use diesel and
electrically powered locomotives, and IF we buy it from you, well, what would the deal be? That's a
lot of engineering to put together to make a reasonably accurate bid, with a lot of IFs built into
the process.

If there really IS going to be some track built on which these locomotives are >required<, then
perhaps they would be more serious about it.
