Re: (erielack) Will the Lackawanna Cutoff rail line pay off?

Check out today's Scranton Times-Tribune editorial page. The Times-Tribune
is calling for a "Passenger Rail Summit" where the governors, senators, etc.,
from PA, NJ and NY would meet on fast tracking the Cutoff service. As I and
others have said, things won't seriously get moving until the pols get seriously
involved. Only then will we perhaps see more than "studies". Finally, a
regional newspaper is on board to publicly support the need for the Cutoff.

With Amtrak's alleged interest in service from NYC to Syracuse via Scranton,
NY's pols have more of a reason to sit at the table. The editorial also
comments on how service was established in New Mexico and done within a short
period of time. Of course as the piece states, the line was only within NM and not
between three states, which made it easier for NM to get the job done.

Obviously the former DL&W route is preferrable for a variety of reasons and
as the 1928 DL&W system map that hangs on my foyer wall says, "The Shortest
Route between New York-Scranton-Binghamton-Syracuse and Buffalo".

The Times-Tribune editorial page also has an opinion on the status of rail
infrastructure in our country and what needs to be done.

Regarding passenger service and those who drive their huge vehicles, my bet
still says that once service is in place, they will be the first ones on board,
hailing how great it is to take the train.

Check out both pieces. You can also respond with your thoughts.
