(erielack) Re: Hornell Local Revisited

Pat and List,

The WB counterpart was UT-97, which terminated at Elmira (not Gang Mills)
with S&U's, unclassified. The crew couldn't sit in Elmira half a day waiting
on the train to be sorted, so would have DH, most likely to Hornell. This
differed from UT-74, where the Hornell-originated move arrived at Gang to
p/u a train already micro-blocked for S&U points. Even if UT-97 did go on to
Hornell, the crew couldn't switch local customers because union agreements
precluded road crews from doing this type of work. As I said previously,
Hornell cars were placed in the Gang Mills block; I've never come across a
Hornell group. The Hornell-based local died when the yard was closed in the
early 70's. UT-97 cars were usually forwarded west on PO-87, although Elmira
originated an NE-97 if traffic levels warranted. I see some Bath cars in the
UT-97 consist, so let me get that to you.

Since we've mentioned crews, did the UT-74/97 crews run GM/Elmira-Utica?

But, then what was the westbound counterpart to UT-74? Could that have done
any local switching in Hornell? Somehow I find it hard to believe that with
all the activity in Hornell that the EL wouldn't have kept a local switcher
stationed there and that one of the "junk trains" wouldn't have stopped to
set off a few cars for the local industries in Hornell and Arkport. I think
my dad has a picture of an SW-something or another puttering around with a
few cars in tow in Hornell in the mid-70s. I'll see what I can find. What
we really need is to talk to someone who grew up in Hornell or spent a lot
of time there. Surely, there must be someone on the list that knows
somebody from that area...
