(erielack) Erie K5, K5a [was PSC Erie K5b]

SGL said, "Not>>>ALL<<< were rebuilt with new engine beds. I know for sure that there were two that were not, one of which is 2944 and I'm not sure of the other one. . ."

Biernacki says, "In the spring of 1940, Erie initiated a major rebuild program that would include all 10 K5a and the lone K5b . . . only three of the original K5 group were rebuilt . . ."

Since pictures abound of 2944 as rebuilt, I'll stick with Dan on this one:

All ten K5a and the K5b (and three K5) were rebuilt.

The rebuild often -- but not always -- included the change to VoxPok drivers. SGL may be thinking of 2938, which Dan says was the only engine to come out of rebuild with ALL spoked drivers. However, by 8/16/47, it had a BoxPok main driver.

As far as I know, the Max Gray came, in both scales, with only the Delta trailing truck. Therefore, it is a K5a. The pumps on the front indicate a rebuild. To backdate it to a K5 takes a lot of work: change the drivers, if you need to and want spoked; move the pumps (getting rid of one in the process and mounting the other where the Elesco feed pump was); moving the Elesco pump; and changing the trailing truck -- which in O scale meant, when I did it, building one. I think it came with the fabricated valve gear hanger (or I changed it: it has one now).

Big tender, little tender? Regular spoked drivers or the ones with the box spokes (hence the name)? Which number? When? Your choice.
