Re: (erielack) EL pushers

SE98 and ES99 very rarely set off at Lake Jct or HO Jct. No time, and the
train ( SE98 ) was a whole E Port train.

Are we sure this ore went to Bethlehem Steel? I may be wrong but some how
Raritan River Steel seems to come to mind? Its been a while. :)

These are D&H cars loaded with ilmenite off the D&H North Creek branch in
the Adirondack region of NY state. The ilmenite originated at National Lead
Industries mine at Tahawus; acc to my SPV atlas, the NLI Tahawus-North Creek
line was operated by D&H. Ilmenite ore is a source for titanium, used for
steel hardening. The most direct route would have been
D&H-Dupont-LV-Bethlehem (assuming the ore was consigned to Beth Steel), but
in the regulated era, circuitous routings were more common since the rate
was the same. The move probably didn't involve LV, since after CNJ quit PA,
either it or RDG retained TR from P'bug to Bethlehem and Allentown over LV.
RDG continued to have access to Beth Steel, and CNJ-RDG continued to operate
Jersey City-Harrisburg (Rutherford) trains. So the ilmenite cars would be
setoff at LakeJct and forwarded to Bethlehem by JH-1 or JH-7. Perhaps a
Lister who also belongs to the Anthracite RR group can provide more details.
Prior to 1972 (and assuming the traffic existed then), the routing would
have been D&H-W Barre-CNJ-Bethlehem.
