The Max Gray Erie "K5a" is wrong in one detail which makes it innacurate for ANY Erie locomotive -- the valve gear hanger. No Erie 4-6-2 had the pumps on the front, a Delta trailing truck and an old-style, fabricated (ridged and rivetted) valve gear hanger. The easy fix would be a little body putty on the valve gear hanger to represent the cast one. A little harder would be to replace the Delta Trailer with a Cole-style to back-date it to one of the three K5s which were rebuilt (2930, 2934, and 2945). Harder yet would be to replace the twin front pumps with a single side-mounted one to get to any K5. By far the most difficult task would be to coordinate the configurations of the drivers with a specific locomotive at a specific date -- not to mention tenders. A myriad of smaller details of piping, whistles, cab doors, drifting valves, etc. further dates each locomotive. To return to the original thread -- will the PSC offerings attend to these details? They offer K5b variations which include one with BoxPok drivers, single side-mounted air pump and vanderbilt tender. Does photographic evidence of this configuration exist? Finally, it has been held that 2960's vanderbilt tender went to other locomotives than 2918. Do photographs exist? Randy Brown, seeking historic veracity. - -------------------------------------------------------------- I concede, already. The confusion arose from a mental gearslip. I was thinking of 2934, not 44. 2934 is one of the three K5 which were rebuilt, pumps in front, but it (and, I think, the other two K5 (not K5a) which were rebuilt retained the original fabricated valve gear hanger. It also has been pictured with a full set of Boxpoks. But, it has the original trailing truck, which is NOT Delta, which is what the Max Gray has. There is a picture on page 45 of Dan's book. I know that Dan has told me that there are two legitmate numbers for the Max Gray model. I lost those numbers when my computer crashed last fall. I haven't really communicated with Dan on this since then. I've got an email going to him shortly, though, and I'll report back.
