Here's a question. This was going through my mind: How often did a steam locomotive have to be totally shut down to clean out the cinders in the smoke box? I assume there was also a time where the firebox needed to be cleaned out as well. I've heard of stories of guys climbing in them to get "fools gold" out of the grating - sounds like really dirty work. I assume this had to be done on some level or regular maintenance and probably contributed to the conversion to diesels.'
