Whippany_RR-227.jpg (image/jpeg, 1532x1016 989874 bytes, BF: 1.57 ppb)
Hi folks,
Here is a slide taken by Earle Gil, from the collection of Steve Hepler, of
DL&W 2-6-0 #565 at Wayne, NJ on display. Steve's story of the 565 follows
below...
- Paul
Here's a shot Earle took of Lackawanna RR 2-6-0 No. 565 after it was
cosmetically restored and set up on display at Tony Citro's restaurant,
"Citro's 1900" on Hamburg Turnpike in Wayne, NJ. The slide mount is dated
February 1970.
MCC Vice-President acquired 565 in June 1967 and it came to Whippany, but by
July 1968 he had sold the loco to Tony. Earle was so upset over this
transaction, that he offered to give Tony No. 4039 (an operating
locomotive), in order that the MCC could keep the 565. Tony wanted a loco
with a leading / pony truck, and did not want the 0-6-0. Earle offered to
make a fake pony truck for 4039, but it was not to be.
What some don't know is that according to John Maris, the MCC had planned to
keep 4039 for only a year or so after it's 1966 return to operation, and
then sell it to any tourist road that had an interest in it. Apparently the
plan was to get the 565 operating, but unfortunately, John got nervous over
the developing cool relations between the MCC and the M&E and began selling
off his equipment. That apparently ended the plans to sell off 4039......
